If you’re just starting out in your photography business or perhaps you’ve been navigating this path for a while, you’ve likely heard of the concept of the “Dream Client”, but what exactly does it mean and why is it so important?
“Ideal” client or we prefer “Dream” client, is the first step to building your brand. For us it’s more than just demographics, age, gender, location. In fact, those factors are largely irrelevant for us. We believe what truly matters is the alignment of values between us and our clients. Our ideal client isn’t just someone who appreciates photography; they cherish it. Capturing memories of her baby or her family are important to her. However, what we offer is far more than just taking photos – we create an experience – one that resonates deeply with both you and your clients.
In this guide, we’ve curated five tips, or steps, to help you in refining your approach and become magnetic to the clients you’ve dreamed of working with.
The first step in cultivating your brand for your photography business is knowing who you want to work with. If your answer is “anyone who wants to pay me” then I’m sorry that’s the wrong answer. Ask yourself, who is your dream client? What values do they hold? What vibe do I aspire to create? Essentially, who do you genuinely enjoy working with? These are the people you want to draw towards your brand.
Now that you have a clear picture of your dream client, it’s time to build a connection with them through your content. Brainstorm and create content ideas that will resonate with them, and tells them that you get them. You are building the know, like, trust factor. Now this is a long game, but it will pay off in attracting lovely, aligned clients who are wonderful to work with. The number one rule here is be consistent.
How do you fill your diary with dreamy shoots that perfectly align with your vision for your business? You show them! Your portfolio should reflect the type of work you want to create. If beach shoots are your passion, then that’s what your portfolio should highlight. Every image you share is a reflection of the clientele you wish to attract, so be selective, and before you post ask yourself “do I want to attract more shoots like this?”

Create an attractive offering that serves both your clients and YOU. Ensure that it is clear and easy to understand and aligns with your vision for your business (and your life), and leaves no doubt about who you are and what you bring to the table.
Now that you’ve identified your ideal clients, clarified your niche, and refined your offerings, it’s time to shout your message to the world! Utilise social media, your website, your blog, Pinterest and start using an email marketing system to regularly engage with your audience.
By following these steps, you’ll soon feel more confident, in-control and ready to fill your diary with the clients that are perfect for you. Remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way, whether you need assistance or wish to explore deeper into your marketing strategies.
